As I sat down to write this blog I got overwhelmed with a case of writer’s block. I couldn’t think of a topic to write about, and then when I did the words didn’t flow. Everything seemed forced, I was overthinking it. So, I decided to take a step back from it. I took a walk, worked on other projects, cleared my head.
Then I thought having writer block is okay, especially given everything that is going on in the world right now. It’s okay. I know that I’m not the only one feeling that way, below are some things that have helped me when I get stuck creatively. Feel free to share what has helped you in the comments.
- Going for a walk
- Yoga
- Listening to music
- Working from a different room. The change of surrounding helps me sometimes.
Taking a nap? The unconscious mind can be really good at putting together all those jumbled pieces. Also, the benefits of eating chocolate should not be underestimated!
@Georgia we need to hang out! 🙂
I am completely with you Agnes. Doing something else does help and going for a walk, but these days are so challenging to even trying to get through the work. I do indulge in comfort food. It does help.
1. Read something wonderful by somebody else.
2. Play catch with your dog.
3. If you don’t have a dog, bounce a ball against the wall.
4. To stop procrastination, which creeps in VERY EASILY without your noticing it, put on a timer (on your phone or the old-fashioned kind) for 25 minutes and do nothing but write during that time. Then you got 5 minutes “off” to do anything else. Then rinse and repeat for several hours.
5. Look at this and laugh: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/07/10/books/what-is-the-hardest-part-of-writing.html
GOOD LUCK!
